Chikmagalur is a hill town in Karnataka’s Malnad region, surrounded by the Western Ghats and known for coffee plantations, forested slopes, and mountain landscapes. The town sits at the center of a coffee-growing district where estates cover the hills around the Bhadra River basin. Chikmagalur’s setting combines plantation country with nearby peaks, streams, and dense forests, making it a base for exploring the western Karnataka highlands. The district is also associated with the introduction and development of coffee cultivation in the region, giving coffee a central place in its agricultural identity and local economy.

Chikmagalur has a cultural landscape shaped by Hindu pilgrimage sites, local traditions, and the history of coffee cultivation. The hill of Baba Budangiri is associated with the Sufi saint Baba Budan and contains the Baba Budan Dargah, a shrine revered by both Muslim and Hindu communities. Nearby Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka, has a small Shiva temple near its summit. The district also contains the ancient Hoysaleswara temple at Halebidu and the Chennakeshava Temple at Belur, both noted for detailed stone carvings that illustrate the architectural traditions of the Hoysala period.

The landscape around Chikmagalur includes high mountain ridges, shola-like forests, waterfalls, rivers, and protected wildlife areas. Mullayanagiri provides views across the surrounding Western Ghats, while Jhari Falls and Hebbe Falls descend through forested terrain near coffee estates. The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary protects forests around the Bhadra River and provides habitat for elephants, gaur, tigers, leopards, deer, and numerous bird species. Kudremukh National Park, farther west, protects another large section of the Western Ghats and is known for grass-covered mountain ridges, evergreen forest, and streams.

Coffee is central to Chikmagalur’s food culture, with plantations producing Arabica and Robusta beans in the district’s shaded highland environment. Visitors can find locally grown coffee prepared in traditional South Indian filter style, as well as estate-grown beans offered by plantation cafés and roasters. Regional Karnataka dishes such as akki rotti, neer dosa, kadubu, and various preparations using coconut and spices are common in local restaurants. The combination of coffee estates, mountain produce, and South Indian cuisine gives Chikmagalur a culinary identity closely tied to the agricultural landscape of the Western Ghats.
